GLS Spain boosts the last mile on the Costa del Sol with the opening of a new depot

Madrid, 31 July 2024 - The leading logistics and transport company GLS Spain has opened a new depot in Cártama (Málaga) with the aim of increasing its service capacity in this province. Its inauguration is part of the current expansion strategy in Spain, which finds in Andalusia a region with great growth potential.

With a surface area of 2,635 m² and a total of 34 interior spaces for vans, the new depot will manage and distribute 40% of GLS packages in the province from its strategic location in the Fahala Logistics Park in Cártama. In this way, it complements the activity currently carried out by the GLS depot in Malaga, located only 15 minutes from the city centre.

The combination of both infrastructures will allow GLS Spain to have greater capillarity both on the west coast of the province and in the inland area, reducing route times by 30 minutes. In addition, the new facility has a direct connection to the A355 highway, which facilitates deliveries during peak periods, such as the summer season.

In accordance with the company's strict standards, the construction of the new building has been carried out with the utmost respect for the environment. Thus, a bicycle parking area has been set up next to the office, electric vehicle chargers have been installed and the complex has a photovoltaic system that exceeds the requirements of the Technical Building Code (CTE). All this has led the new GLS Spain depot to obtain LEED Platinum certification, the highest recognition awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for meeting the highest standards of sustainability and energy efficiency.

With the opening of our new depot in Cártama, we are not only doubling our delivery capacity in Málaga and boosting the last mile, but we are also reaffirming our commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency,’ says Cristóbal Monje, South Division Manager of GLS Spain.

Currently, the province of Malaga has 18 agencies, 181 Parcel Shops and 2 GLS Spain hubs. This business model allows the company to absorb a greater volume of packages and distribute them faster and more agile, increasing the satisfaction of customers and recipients.
