Madrid. 12th November, 2024 – GLS Spain has strengthened its commitment to sustainability through a comprehensive agreement with Endesa. Leveraging the leadership of both companies in their respective sectors, they will continue to drive the transition towards a low-carbon economy. This strategic agreement, aimed at reducing their environmental impact, lays out plans for three key areas: energy, mobility and solar power.
Regarding energy consumption, GLS Spain has secured a fixed-price energy supply, enabling it to manage resources more efficiently. This contract encompasses all energy supplies used by the company in Spain, approximately 10 GWh, and guarantees that 100% will come from certified renewable sources.
Another critical aspect of this agreement is mobility, which will enable GLS Spain to move towards an entirely electric fleet as well as meet charging needs, both inside and outside its facilities.
To this end, Endesa will supply and, in some cases, install over 100 charging points at GLS facilities across Spain. Up to 19 locations nationwide will feature chargers of various capacities, including ultra-fast chargers (300 kW) designated primarily for GLS’ delivery fleet. What’s more, both companies are working to ensure this charging infrastructure is available to all employees, supporting their transition to electric mobility if they so choose.
This agreement also provides GLS Spain’s fleet with access to Endesa’s public charging network under favourable conditions, allowing drivers to charge beyond GLS’ facilities —a benefit that extends to all GLS employees.
The third key area of this agreement covers on-site energy creation and consumption. Endesa has already started installing an on-site photovoltaic plant at the GLS delegation in Coslada, which will cover approximately 30% of its energy needs. However, the goal is to equip all its facilities with proprietary solar power in the coming years, reinforcing its commitment to clean and renewable energy.
Endesa has undertaken this project as a turnkey solution, which encompasses calculating, designing, manufacturing, supplying, transporting, insuring, installing, and commissioning the on-site system. This initial project at the GLS site includes 155 solar panels with a solar capture area of over 300 m2 and capacity of 78 kWp. This is the first plant among the remaining delegations, with plans to continue developing on-site solar energy systems and expand this technology to as many of the 19 locations as possible.
"This agreement with Endesa reflects our commitment to leading the change toward a more sustainable business model. We are convinced that every step counts, and this represents significant progress in reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing efficiency at all levels of our operations", says Daniel López, Environmental director of GLS Spain.
For Davide Ciciliato, Endesa’s General Director of Commercialisation, “The climate change clock is ticking, and many companies have set their roadmap to reduce their environmental impact. At Endesa, we’re helping them design personalised decarbonisation energy strategies with a 360° approach.”
Through this agreement, GLS Spain not only reaffirms its commitment to environmental protection, it also strengthens its leadership regarding sustainability within the logistics sector.
